He was the son of Wesley W Thompson Sr and Dorothy L Balk. He was a retired electrical engineer and a lifetime member of IEEE. He attended schools in several states, but graduated from high school in Chattanooga, TN. He attended Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Georgia, as did his father and was a commissioned officer in the US Army. He served in Japan where he witnessed the handing over of authority to the Japanese government, and served as a member of the Army Signal Corps. He worked in Iran, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Indonesia and Yap, Micronesia. He also graduated from University of Southern California with his master's in Electrical Engineering in 1973.
He is survived by his former wife, Martha Jo Bush, two children, VL Thompson and WW Thompson, stepdaughter, VL Lawrence, current wife Anne Regiana Thompson and two stepsons Ray and Rio Thompson. One brother JW Thompson and sister L T Collier. He lived for over 30 years in Java, Indonesia.
