Otis McCorkle Jones, Jr., ("Buddy") age 85 of Charlotte, NC, died Nov 15, 2019 at Levine Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville, NC after a long illness. He passed peacefully in the arms of his loving wife with his family by his side.
Otis was born in Galesburg, Illinois on July 6th, 1934 the son of Otis M. Jones Sr. and Thelma Young Jones. He spent his childhood in Fort Worth, Texas and then moved to Pageland, SC in 1949. Otis graduated from Pageland High School in 1952 and served the United States Army during the Korean War, serving as a medic. He graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.
Otis was a self-made man, putting himself through college. He was later employed by The Dallas Times Herald and owner of Any Hour construction. Otis spent his career in insurance, starting as a Multi-line claims adjuster and retiring as a Claims Manager.
After retirement, he worked part time as a CMS substitute teacher and loved working with children, especially when teaching his own Grandchild's class. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, NASCAR, and USC Gamecock sports. Otis was an avid reader and loved country music.
Otis enjoyed many things in life, but treasured his family and friends most. A favorite activity was attending children’s and grandchildren’s events. He was a Christian, a good, kind, generous man, and always a loyal friend. His family adored him and were most thankful for his life. Otis is survived by his wife Shirley, their daughter, Laurie Jones Pariano and her son Christopher; a son Jay Hicks, his wife, Amy and their children Justin (Courtney) and Colten; and a daughter Shirl Hicks Knight, her husband, Dennis and their children LaShirl Knight Vaughan (Nick) and Malcolm; great-grandchildren Kenslie, Addie, and Walker Hicks, and Chance, Noah, and Connor Vaughan. He is also survived by two children from a previous marriage, Sandy and Mac Jones. A memorial service will be held on Saturday December 28th at 3 pm at Beulah Presbyterian Church, 8305 Landsford Rd., Monroe NC 28112 Memorials can be made to Beulah Presbyterian Church in Monroe, NC or Levine Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville, NC.
Otis’ family has given the privilege of caring for him and for them to the family of Lowe-Neddo Funeral Home, 4715 Margaret Wallace, Matthews, NC. Services honoring the life, love and blessing of Otis will be held on Saturday, December 28, 2019, at 3 pm at Beulah Church, 8305 Landsford Road, Monroe, NC 28112. Reverend Buddy Pigg of Mt. Harmony Baptist Church will be leading the service. Following the service, military honors will be rendered and then all will join in the church hall for food and fellowship.
