Brenda was a member at Oak Ridge Baptist. She was a member of the Pewitt High School class of 1975 and also graduated from ETSU in Commerce. Brenda married James Hawkins, her high school sweetheart in 1979. They were blessed with a son, Richard, in 1986. She retired after 33 years of teaching and coaching girls’ athletics at the Jr. high and high school level at Commerce ISD, Wimberley ISD, Mt. Pleasant ISD, with most of her teaching and coaching at Hays Consolidated ISD in Buda, Texas. As a family in Buda, Texas, the Hawkins were avid Texas Longhorn Fans. After returning to her home area in 2013, she and Richard have been loyal Pewitt Brahma supporters. Brenda was also a loyal and loving supporter of all activities of her great nieces and nephews. They all held a special place in her heart. Brenda had returned to the classroom in August teaching fourth grade at Pewitt Elementary. She quickly bonded with the children and staff.
Brenda was preceded in death by her husband, James Hawkins; her parents; and one brother, Bobby Jones.
Survivors include one son, Richard Hawkins of Marietta; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ennis and Kay Hawkins of Huntsville, Texas, Virginia James of Omaha, Texas, and Nancy and Bobby Abston of Naples, Texas; and numerous other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 23, 2019 at Oak Ridge Baptist Church in Marietta with Dr. Chas Carlisle officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the church prior to the funeral.
