Warren McCoy, 80, of Marysville, Kansas, passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully on December 13, 2019, at his home.
Visitation is Thursday, December 19, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Kinsley Mortuary. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, December 20 at the United Methodist Church in Marysville.
Burial will be at 3:30 p.m., Friday, in the Lyons Municipal Cemetery, Lyons, Kansas.
Warren was born on December 31, 1938 in Lyons, Kansas, to Joe and Edith (Bingle) McCoy. He attended elementary grades in Great Bend, Kansas, and secondary grades in Lyons. In 1967, He received a BSE from Emporia State University.
He served in the Navy aboard the USS Passumpsic (A0-107) during which time he made 4 tours to WESTPAC. He was honorably discharged a second-class petty officer after 4 years of active duty.
On May 15, 1961, he married his high school sweetheart, Rowena Dressel, at Ebenezer United Methodist Church in rural Lyons. She passed away on June 14, 2005.
He enjoyed camping, fishing and boating with his wife, bird hunting, playing pool, writing poetry and being a Dad and Granddad. He spent much of his time watching sports and especially loved following local athletes.
Warren taught Science at Marysville High School for 30 years before retiring in 1997. He often spoke of what a joy and privilege this had been to him. His creative teaching style, true love and concern for the well-being of kids touched many lives. His daughters can’t count the number of times they have heard, “Your Dad was my favorite teacher”. Even in recent years when he ran into a previous student, he could quickly tell his girls what year they had graduated from MHS and often had a fun story or memory to share. Warren also worked for many years as a professional house painter.
He had previously served on the Marysville Hospital Board, helped with the Marshall County Food Pantry and delivered Meals-on-Wheels. He continued to be active in the Marysville community.
If you knew Warren, you knew a brilliant, quick-witted man with a funny (and often inappropriate) sense of humor who loved to laugh and enjoy life. Above all, Warren was an incredibly dedicated family man who could be counted on by everyone. He will be missed beyond measure.
Survivors include his daughters, Jacquelyn (Todd) Sump, rural Randolph, Kansas, and Sheila McCoy, Manhattan, Kansas; granddaughter, Tia Lockhart, Manhattan; sister, Jane Laughlin, Winfield, Kansas; and several beloved nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; sister, JoAnna Knight; nephews, Phil Knight and John Knight; and niece, Judi Knight-Hutton.
Memorials will be used for an academic scholarship for a Marysville High School student. Contributions may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary.
