Steven Eugene Henderson, 68, Passed into Glory at Community North Hospital, Indianapolis, on Friday, December 20, 2019. He was born on December 10, 1951 in Bedford, Indiana, a son of Loren and Maxine (Hubbard) Henderson.

He grew up in the rolling limestone country of Lawrence County. Steve graduated from Oolitic High School in 1969 and served as class president for all four years. Steve was a member of the undefeated Oolitic Bearcats squad that beat the host Bedford Stonecutters by 25 points in the 1968 semi-final of the Bedford sectional, and then cruised to another double-digit win in the sectional final that Saturday evening. As a senior in 1969, Henderson led the Bearcats with a 19.6 points per game scoring average.

Steve lived most of his adult life in Decatur Township of Marion County, where he coached boys' and girls' youth sports and was active in local civic organizations. He also returned to school as an adult, graduating from IUPUI with a degree in Accounting. A proud Democrat and supporter of the workingman, Steve spent his career at the Indiana AFL-CIO. He retired in 2011 after 36 years.

He was preceded in death by his father and is survived by his mother, Maxine, of Bedford; his siblings, Bill of Atlanta, GA, and Jim and Linda of Bedford. He is survived by his children, Tim (Lara Beck) Henderson, Holly (Mike) Roessler, and Robby Henderson, all of Indianapolis; and four grandchildren, Skylar, Shelby and Michael Paul Roessler, and Taggart Henderson. He also is survived by a nephew, Joe (Kelsey) Henderson, and nieces, Amanda Henderson, Jaima (John) McCabe, and Jacque Louden.

Steve had a lifelong love of his Lawrence County heritage and enjoyed visiting his mother, sister and brother in Bedford. He was an avid student of history and spent many memorable weekends camping at Lake Monroe. Steve was an accomplished storyteller who regaled his grandchildren with tales ranging from his prowess at sports to his close encounters with aliens.

A visitation for Steve will take place on Thursday, December 26 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Oakley Hammond Funeral Home, 5342 E. Washington St., Indianapolis. A graveside service at the Gilgal Cemetery in Heltonville, Indiana will follow on Friday, December 27 at 10 a.m
