Louise Mary (Kraus) Montgomery, of Fredericksburg, passed away at her home on February 26, 2019 at the age of 80 years.
A vigil, led by Deacon Patrick Klein, and including the recitation of the Rosary led by members of the St. Ann’s Society will be held in the chapel of Schaetter’s Funeral Home at 6:00PM, Friday, March 1.
Visitation will take place on Friday, March 1 from 4:00-7:00PM and Saturday, March 2nd from 8:00-9:45AM.
Louise was born on September 8, 1938 in the family home at 711 West Main Street, Fredericksburg; the daughter of Nora Clara (Knopp) Kraus and Erwin Christian Kraus. Louise attended St. Mary’s School for 12 years, graduating from St. Mary’s High School in 1956. Often, on the way home from school, she stopped at the Fredericksburg Coca Cola Bottling Company at 425 West Main Street to visit her Grossmutter Theresia (Segner) Kraus and her father – and often enjoyed an ice cold Coke!
From 1956 until 1959, she attended Seton School of Nursing in Austin and took classes at St. Edward’s University to become a Registered Nurse. She married Stephen E. Montgomery, Jr. in St. Mary’s Church in Fredericksburg on June 13, 1959. She worked as a nurse at the Austin State School until a growing family required more of her attention.
Louise and the family accompanied her husband to Hyderabad, Calcutta and Madras in India; to Colombo, Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Jerusalem, Dacca, Bangladesh, and Bonn, Germany where he was assigned. While in Bonn, they were fortunate to have the opportunities to visit places from which her ancestors had come and to enjoy the company of her distant relatives. They also spent some years in Tidewater, Virginia; Chicago, and Colorado Springs where her husband taught for two years at the U.S. Air Force Academy.
Louise adapted well to the various living conditions and embraced the different cultures she encountered, bringing with her memories of the cuisines, arts, and histories which she lived and shared. She was a gracious hostess, excellent and resourceful manager of the household under some unusual and trying circumstances, and was a wonderful wife and mother. She had an audience with Pope Paul VI, met Mother Teresa of Calcutta, and many notable personages during their life abroad, but she always returned to her family and friends in Texas which held a special place in her heart.
She is survived by her husband; one daughter, Karen Louise Jordan (Brian), three sons: Stephen Vincent, Kevin Paul, and Erwin James (Amy); six grandchildren: Katherine, Jacquelyn, and Aaron Crenwelge; Monica, Christian, and Kaden Matthew Montgomery, and numerous nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews, sisters in law; Ima Jane Kraus, Carol Kraus, LaJoyce Kraus, Mary Helen (Montgomery) Hensel, Elizabeth Anne Montgomery. Louise was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Antoinette Kneese, and five brothers, James, Frederick, David, Carl, and Erwin Kraus, Jr., who died in early childhood.
The body will lay in state in the chapel of Schaetter’s Funeral Home, Fredericksburg until 9:45 am Saturday, March 2nd. With the Mass of Resurrection in St. Mary’s Church, Fredericksburg, Texas at 10:00 a.m.
