Rachel Young passed away quietly in her sleep at Bethany Homes in Fargo on December 19, 2019. She was born Rachel Rose Bender, along with her twin brother, Ralph, on their parents’ farm near Berlin, on September 19, 1922. They were among the youngest of twelve children born to Jacob and Katrina (Katie Schock) Bender. She was 97 years old.

Rachel married Wendell Mix Young on November 8, 1941, and then moved to Phoenix, AZ, where Mix enlisted in the US Army Air Corps and worked as an airplane engine mechanic at Luke Field. After WWII ended, Rachel and Mix returned to Berlin to partner with Mix’s brother to take over the Young family farm for their dad, the late U.S. Senator Milton R. Young.

Rachel and Mix lived on the farm and raised their five children there until 1966, when they built a new farmstead nearby, and there continued to grow grain for many years. Their seasonal freedom allowed them to spend winters in Mesa, AZ, and they continued to do so for more than 30 years. They loved to play golf, and Rachel even made a hole in one!

After Mix died from a farm accident in 2005, Rachel continued to spend winters in AZ and live on the farm until moving to Rosewood Court in LaMoure, and later to Bethany Homes in Fargo.

Rachel loved God and her country. She never failed to put flowers on family graves on Memorial Day, and had a flagpole erected at the Berlin Cemetery in honor of those who served our country. She was empathetic, and generous of heart and spirit. Her cup was always half full, and she often cited “The Serenity Prayer”. She will be remembered as being grateful for what she had, and for giving so much to others, expecting little or nothing in return.

As a hard working farmer-partner, Rachel cooked for the hired hands, hauled grain, and loved growing vegetables and flowers. She was a community organizer and leader, involved with the American Legion Auxiliary, ND Order of Eastern Star, 4-H, Berlin School Mothers’ Club, Republican Women, Homemakers, and the Memorial Park Country Club.

She attended the Methodist Church in Edgeley and Community of Christ Church in Mesa, AZ. In earlier years, she sang for many church functions and funerals. Rachel was incredibly creative. Her sewing machine lid was never closed.

Rachel was preceded in death by her parents, husband, twin brother, Ralph, who was killed in WWII, and eight siblings: Edward, Alvin, Lenora, O’Tillie, Arline, Harold, and Aaron, who was also killed in WWII. She is survived by three siblings: Walter P. (Virginia) Bender, Sr., Hilda Braun, and Ruthie (James) Matzek; and her five children and their spouses: Charmane (Gordon) Disrud, Mary Beth (Ronald) McCullagh, James (Jane) Young, Joycette (Dr. David) Dapra, and Sonja (Dr. Charles) Durkee. Rachel leaves behind 15 grandchildren, their spouses, 27 great grandchildren, and many Bender and Young nieces, nephews and cousins.

A visitation will be at 10 o’clock a.m. and a funeral service at 11 o’clock a.m. on Saturday, December 28, 2019, at the Wesley United Methodist Church, Edgeley with burial to follow at the Berlin Cemetery.
