Mr. Luther Virgil Clemons, Jr. age 97 of Cedartown, passed away on Friday, March 3, 2017. He was born on May 4, 1919 in Walker County, Georgia. He was the son of the late Luther Virgil Clemons, Sr. and Myrtle Edge Clemons.
Mr. Clemons was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Cedartown and a WWII veteran. His military service involved active duty in the U S Army from 1942 thru 1945 during which he participated in the Normandy invasion and campaigns in France, Italy, and Austria, concluding with the Battle of the Bulge in Germany under the command of General George Patton.
He was awarded two bronze stars, a purple heart, and the associated campaign ribbons.
In 2005, the Battle of Normandy Museum awarded him a certificate of appreciation for liberating Caen, France, in recognition of his participation in Operation Overlord.
Mr. Clemons was a founding member of the Cedartown Veterans Memorial Park committee and took great pride in attending the semi-annual ceremonies.
He was a member of the American Legion for over 70 years and participated in the American Legion local post 86 honor guard for many years. He was a life member of the Military Order of Purple Heart and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Mr. Clemons is survived by his wife of 65 years, Gladys Tanner Clemons; daughters, Gail Lindsey (Ken), Sandra Royster (John) and Patti Dooley (Larry); sister, Virginia Ware (M.B.); grandchildren, Mike Beck, Karen Lindsey Smith (Kelly), Amy Dooley Monroe (Rob) and Lori Dooley Casey (Ben); 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Clemons is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Louie Clemons, Ray Clemons, Johnny Clemons, James Clemons and Frankie Clemons ; grandson, Kevin Beck, and son-in-law Doyal Beck.
The funeral arrangements for Mr. Luther Virgil Clemons, Jr. will be conducted on, Sunday, March 5, 2017 at four o'clock in the afternoon in the chapel of the Gammage Funeral Home with Dr. David Taylor and Rev. Wayne Benefeld officiating, and with Mr. John Royster delivering the eulogy. Interment will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery with Full Military Rites conducted by the Brewster-Cleveland American Legion Honor Guard Post #86.
The family of Mr. Clemons will receive family and friends on Sunday, March 5, 2017 from two o'clock in the afternoon until the funeral service hour at the Gammage Funeral Home.
The family has respectfully requested that flowers are to be omitted and donations can be made to the memorial fund at First Baptist Church of Cedartown, P.O. Box 720, Cedartown, GA 30125 or to Homestead Hospice, 1 N. Tennessee Street, Cartersville, GA 30120.
The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers: Cole Beck, Mike Beck, Ben Casey, Joe Dyer, Seth McKelvey, Rob Monroe, and Kelly Smith.
The honor guard of the Brewster-Cleveland American Legion Post 86 will serve as honorary pallbearers.
