John Calhoun, June 4, 1933 - December 13, 2019

John Calhoun, 86, of York, Pennsylvania, was called home to be with the Lord, his parents and siblings on Friday, December 13, 2019, at Rest Haven where he resided for five years.

John was number four of the six Calhoun children and he was the last living family member of the immediate Calhoun family. He was preceded in death by his parents, George (father), Julia Sease (mother), George “Pickle” Jr. (brother), Herbert “Eggball” (brother), Curtis (brother), Betty Hopkins (sister), Leroy “Lee” (brother) and favorite niece, Marion Howard.

He resided in medical facilities, ShadowFax Corporation and Rest Haven for most of his life. Uncle John was a lovable man, the staff of the facilities loved and adored him. He touched every heart he met at the facilities in which he resided. He will be greatly missed.

Uncle John had several interests and he would let you know what they were when you came to visit him. He was the first person you encountered when you went to Rest Haven as he sat in his wheelchair looking out the door and checking out everyone coming and going. He loved music (keyboard, bongos, guitars), fire trucks, ambulances, airplanes and helicopters.

It is important to note Uncle John kept his keyboard with him and whoa to anyone who tried to touch it. He had a love for car and truck toys, stuff animals, ink pens, instruments and a baseball cap for his head. Uncle John also loved to wear beads (like he been to Mardi Gras in New Orleans) and Christmas lights. He was a character. Uncle John did not like dogs (he said dogs bite) and he did not hesitate to tell the nursing staff at York Hospital during his most recent stay.

Uncle John’s most favorite past time was sitting on the front porch at Rest Haven during the warm weather months watching the trucks go on the interstate, planes flying in the air and the emergency helicopter landing and taking off at York Hospital. The staff at Rest Haven said Uncle John was very helpful. Last and most importantly, Uncle John loved to eat and during some visits we would have to tell him to slow down as he ate.

He leaves to cherish his memory, two sister-in-laws, Phyllis L. Calhoun (Leroy) of York, PA and Doris Calhoun (Curtis) of Buffalo, NY, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. While he will be missed by those whose hearts he touched, we are praising God for giving Uncle John his wings so he can live forever, freely with Him.
