Harold C. “Sonny” Lampher, 84, of South Beloit, IL, died Thursday, August 20, 2009 in Meriter Hospital, Madison, WI.

He was born January 26, 1925 in Beloit, WI the son of Theodore and Alice Smith Lampher. Sonny graduated from South Beloit High School and attended the University of Illinois and Kent College for police training. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving three years with the Navy and six years with the Navy Reserves. Sonny married Betty Thorson on September 19, 1948 in Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Beloit, WI.

Sonny joined the South Beloit Police Department and worked with them for five years before taking a job working with the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office for ten years as a license investigator. He later joined the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department, retiring in 1984 after 20 years of service as an Administrative Captain. He also served on the South Beloit City Council for eight years.

He was past president of the South Beloit Lions Club, served on the Board of Directors with the South Beloit American Legion Holtz-Hirst Post #288 and the South Beloit Businessmen’s Association. Sonny was also a member of the Beloit Shrine Club, Belvidere V.F.W Post #1461, a 35 year member of the Star in the East Masonic Lodge #166, and was a lifetime and charter member of the Fraternal Order of Police. Sonny also worked Bingo for all three of the South Beloit service clubs and received the Melvin Jones award.

Sonny belonged to Faith Lutheran Church, South Beloit, IL where he was baptized and confirmed. He enjoyed being mechanical, including working on old hot rods and tractors, spending time in his pole barn with friends who visited him there. Sonny loved his grandchildren, working in his garden, and the river.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Betty Lampher of South Beloit, IL; two sons, Gary (Cheryl) Lampher and Steven Lampher both of South Beloit, IL; two grandchildren, Philip (Julie) Lampher and Beth Ann Lampher both of South Beloit, IL; one great grandson, Alexander Lampher; one cousin, Robert (Barbara) Hart of Cerritos, CA; several nieces and nephews.
