CDR Miller was in the USNR Merchant Marine program for many years. He sailed Unlimited Master for several drilling companies and was master on the Dynamically Positioned Drill ship "Discoverer Seven Seas". He was a 1972 graduate of Texas A&M Maritime Academy in Galveston, TX. He and his wife Deborah Armstrong were married on 28 Dec 1974.

In his later years he earned a Masters in Education on line, and taught math and physics in the North Side ISD. He is survived by his wife Deborah, three sons and a daughter and 4, soon to be 5 grand kids.

The US Navy preformed the burial service at sea from the USS Farragut (DDG - 99). The ship presented a video of the service to his family, a certificate of the location and the empty rifle shell casings from the final salute.
