While he was at work on November 29, 1951, his appendix ruptured and he had to be rushed into emergency surgery. Although they tried to pump his stomach completely, he became sick on the operating table, where he aspirated and died.
At the time of his death, he was survived by his parents, Calvin Lyman Roland, Sr. and Lexie Viola McCoy Roland; two brothers: Calvin Lyman Roland, Jr. and Henderson Commodore Roland; two sisters: Betty Jean Roland (Carl) Leatherman and Edwina Doris Roland; and one niece: Brenda K. Leatherman.
