Duane was born on May 23, 1942, in Lance Creek, Wyoming, on the Nelson ranch, the son of Linden and Anna (Gaukel) Nelson. He attended elementary school in Lance Creek and then finished his education in Lusk, Wyoming where he graduated from Niobrara County High School in 1960. After graduation, Duane married his high school sweetheart, Bonnie Morgan, on July 23, 1960. Duane and Bonnie had three children; Ron, Kent and Kim.
In his early adulthood, Duane worked for MACJAC oilfield services. In 1963, Duane took a job as an apprentice lineman for the Niobrara Electric Association. After ten years, he was promoted to line superintendent, a position he held until he retired in 2002. After retirement, Duane and Bonnie moved to Fort Laramie, Wyoming.
He enjoyed working on cars, golfing, fishing and spending time with his family; especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Duane was a hard working, great family man who will be missed by many! He will always be remembered for his ornery grin, the twinkle in his eyes and his dry wit.
Duane is survived by his wife of 59 years, Bonnie; his son Ron (Stephanie); his son Kent (Debbie); his daughter Kim (David); his mother, Anna Nelson; his brother Royce (Carolyn); his sister Nadine (Russ) Kilmer; his brother Monte (Pat); his brother Barry (Rhonda); his six grandchildren, Courtney, Allison, Kiffany, Chase, Jacob and Jordyn; and his six great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his father, Linden; his infant brother, Ronnie and his baby sister, Tammy.
