Billy Duraine Lowe, 64, passed away at his home on Monday, September 10, 2018. He was born and raised in Madison County and spent his last 37 years living in West Asheville.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Junior Lowe; mother, Ruby Marie Shelton Lowe; brother Alvin Lowe; and brother’s-in-law Carol Shelton and Bernice Banks.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Fender Lowe; daughter Leslie Klodt and son-in-law Jakob Klodt; grandsons Ascher & Maverick Klodt; brothers and sisters Winda Shelton, Janefar (Jenny) Bullman (Arnold), Richard Lowe (Brenda), Jeffrey Lowe all of Marshall. Lee Ann Banks of Asheville and Dalas Bullman (Emmitt) of Newport, TN. He had many nieces and nephews all of whom meant so much to him.
Billy served in the U.S. Air Force as a Sergeant Aircraft Maintenance Specialist for B-52 Bomber and he took great pride in serving his country. After returning home from the military, he had a lifelong career as an Electronics Technician.
He was married to the love of his life for 45 years. She and his daughter meant everything to him! His daughter, an only child, was his bundle of joy and the apple of his eye! He enjoyed working on home projects and loved spending time remodeling their home in West Asheville. He was always lending a helping hand to others and could fix anything. His father-in-law, Harley, said he was the “smartest man I have ever known”.
He loved bowling, basketball, baseball and driving a school bus. He would walk from his house to school just to pick up the bus. He loved attending family events where big family meals were always included. He loved fishing and always knew the best fishing holes on Big Laurel and Shelton Laurel. He loved Christmas time and especially loved watching everyone open their gifts. He was always in charge of the Easter baskets and hiding the Easter eggs with the kids. He would get more excited than the kids!
He loved people and loved talking with people. No matter what question he was asked, he would always have an answer (a long answer) and would give you more information than you would ever want to know. And you better never start a conversation with him if you didn’t have at least 30 minutes or more. Not only could he give you lots of answers, but he loved hearing what you had to say and loved reminiscing about the “good ole days” and family memories.
When his son-in-law, Jakob Klodt, came along and took away his baby girl, he wasn’t sure how he felt about that. But once he saw how much he loved her and how happy he made her, things began to change and Jakob was officially family! When the day came that he became a Papaw and got two for the price of one, two times the fun, and two grandsons to love, oh the joy it brought to him and to his life!
He loved his grand babies and loved being a Papaw. He was a great husband, dad, uncle, son, brother, brother-in-law, and Papaw and will be missed by all!
A celebration of his life will be held at Madison Funeral Home with Family Visitation on Thursday, September 13, from 6pm-8 pm and Service on Friday, September 14, at 11 am. Rev. Jake Fender, Rev. Ralph Shelton and Rev. Eric Young will be officiating. Pallbearer’s include his nephews: Gary Banks, James Banks, Bradley Lowe, Chris Bullman, Brian Bullman and Nathaniel Shelton.
