Michael was born in Asheville, NC on February 17, 1946; son of the late Fred Laster and Nan Morrow. He was the youngest of 3 children and preceded in death by brothers, Gerald and Larry.
Michael is survived by his true love, best friend and wife of 52 years, Pam Chandler. Loving “DAD” to Tim (Melody) and Jeremy (Karen). Adoring “UNCLE MIKE” to Tony, Tammy and Susan. Proud “POPPA” to Taylor and Ella.
Michael is remembered by his family and friends as a loving and generous person who always saw the good in others. From humble beginnings, Michael overcame adversity to build the life and family he always wanted.
A Hall of Fame athlete at North Buncombe High School, he left home after graduation to pursue his dream of pitching in the big leagues. Despite success, Michael yearned to return home; he did, marrying his high school sweetheart, Pam. Together they built a beautiful life together in the community they loved. Michael was a fixture in the North Buncombe athletic community as a coach, leader, mentor and fan. Michael’s competitive spirit enabled him to launch a successful career in insurance; from door-to-door collections, numerous sales awards and co-founder of Western Heritage Insurance.
Michael was most proud of his family -- they were always #1. He loved unconditionally and made us laugh uncontrollably -- always the jokester! A role model that taught us the important things in life: always keep a clean car, there is a proper way to mow the yard and sometimes, you too, can hit the perfect tee shot. Our hero will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.
Michael will be put to rest in a private graveside service at Morgan Hill Baptist Church.
A public celebration of Michael’s life will be held at Brookstone Church (90 Griffee Rd, Weaverville, NC 28787) on Saturday January 5, 2018 at 1:00pm.
