14-year-old Martin C. Lesley was shot through both legs by 14-year-old Cedric Sharff while walking through a watermelon patch near Monument, Oregon, with some friends (Stony Mael, __, ___). Cedric piled watermelons around him as he lay under a tree to make it look like he was stealing them. Martin died after being taken to Condon, Gilliam County, Oregon, to a doctor who amputated one of his legs. Cedric Sharff was tried in John Day, sentenced to prison for 5 years, and he returned to Grant County where he lived to the age of 94 years. He is buried in the Hamilton Cemetery, near Monument.
