British Naval Officer. He was killed at the Battle of Toulouse 1744 against the French and Spanish fleets. As a whole the battle was not a success for England, and a number of officers were court-marshalled as a consequence. However, Cornewall's was the first monument for a naval officer voted for by Parliament, and it also contains the earliest representation of Britannia in statuary - as well as a cartouche of the battle itself.
