Donald, 93, of Carson City passed away Monday, June 11, 2018 at his home. He was the son of Paul and Neva (Gallagher) Schafer.
He lived most of his life in the Carson City area. On December 11, 1948 he married Phyllis Elaine Dean at the Carson City Congregational Church.
Donald went to work at the Crystal Refinery in 1948, taking over the Superintendent position on February 8, 1969. He would give 45 years of service, until his retirement in 1993.
He served his country in the United States Navy during WWII from June of 1943, until his honorable discharge in April of 1946 as a Boatswains Mate Second Class. Donald served aboard the USS Bombard and USS Vanderburg as a mine sweeper. He was a member of the Mark Daniels VFW Post in Perrinton and a 70 year member of the Carson City American Legion Post #380, where he served on the Ritual Squad since nearly the beginning. Donald was also a member of the Carson City Congregational Church.
Donald is survived by his sons; William (Rebecca), David (Sandra), Mark (Cindy), seven granddaughters; Dr. Roseanna (David) Noordhoek, Angela (Chris) Teremi, Julie Schafer, Lisa (Jason) Hart, Kayla (Sabrina) Hayley, Elizabeth Schafer and Lindsey Schafer, 12 great-grand children, Ava and James Noordhoek, Emerson and Harvey Teremi, Mackenzie and Jackson Hensel, Ryan and Emma Hart, Landon Sinclair, Nevaeh Skym, Selena and Cory Day, brothers; Larry (Kay), Alan (Alice) and sisters; Janice Riggle and Mary (Gene) Price.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Phyllis and a brother, Ronald Jack.
Memorial services was held on Saturday, June 23, 2018 at the Lux and Schnepp Funeral Home, Carson City with Rev. Ried Martin officiating. Interment was held at a later date in Bloomer Township Cemetery.
