Funeral services for Sarah Emma Wilson Butler will be held at noon on Monday at St. James United Methodist Church, 720 Broad St., Sumter, with the Rev. Cheryl G. Johnson, pastor, officiating and the Rev. Mary Johnson as eulogist.

Mrs. Butler will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. for further viewing until the hour of service.

Interment will follow at Hillside Memorial Park, Sumter.

The public may view from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Palmer Memorial Chapel, Sumter.

Sarah Emma Wilson Butler, 78, wife of the late Eddie Lee Butler Sr., died on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2019, at Encompass Rehabilitation Hospital in Columbia.

Born in the St. Charles community of Mayesville, she was a daughter of the late John Spann and Minnie Lee Wilson. Sarah was educated in the public schools of Lee County. She was a graduate of Mt Pleasant High School Class of 1958 and a graduate of Allen University, Columbia. She was a devoted educator who retired from the Lee County Public School System after 30 years of service.

As a young adult, she was a member of Mt. Moriah UMC in Mayesville. After marriage she became a member of St. James UMC in Sumter. She faithfully served as a member of the United Methodist Women, as a church greeter, assisted with Vacation Bible School and was a studious participant in the weekly Bible study class and Women's Sunday School Class.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Eddie Lee Butler Sr.; a brother, David Wilson; two brothers-in-law, Allen Butler Sr. and Leland A. Butler Jr.; one nephew, Allen Butler Jr.; a stepson Eddie Lee Butler Jr.; and a stepdaughter, Cathy Butler.

She leaves to cherish precious memories: two children, Jacqueline T. Butler and Reginald M. Butler, both of Sumter; three grandchildren, Christopher, Caitlyn and Camille of Simpsonville; one uncle, Robert "Bobby" Wilson of Fayetteville, North Carolina; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth G. Butler and Geraldine W. Butler, both of Sumter; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
