Larry T Whitten, 81, of Scottsboro, AL and a veteran of the United States Army Special Forces and United States Navy passed away in his residence on December 11, 2019. Larry was born in Athens, AL and is the son of Thomas and Kathleen Whitten.
The memorial service will be at 2 pm on Saturday, December 14th 2019 at Faith Baptist Church located at 1688 Charity Lane, Hazel Green, AL. Services are being handled by the Hazel Green Funeral Home in Hazel Green, AL. Larry served his country and the local communities within which he lived with dedication and untiring commitment to protect and serve them to the highest level. Larry overcame polio as a child and he used the illness as a challenge to be the best that he could be, never quitting, never accepting defeat, always accepting a new challenge and remaining loyal to those with whom who led and served. Larry served 3 years in the U.S. Navy, 2 ½ years in the U.S. Army Special Forces Green Berets, 7 ½ years as a San Diego, CA Police Officer, 16 years as the Sheriff of Camden County, MO, 4 years as a Missouri State House of Representative, and 6 years as Colonel of the Missouri State Water Patrol. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice and was a graduate of the FBI Academy. Larry volunteered in youth programs, crime prevention programs, and after he retired, he continued to volunteer in various youth and other community programs. He was a mentor to many people, his willingness to teach others life lessons will continue to make a positive impact on those that he mentored and taught. Larry enjoyed fishing with friends, riding horses, reading books and writing. He is loved by his family and friends and he will be greatly missed.
