Resident of Allegan, MI. He was the son of the late Victor Rieber and Kathleen Theresa Baker. He was later adopted by James Lawrence Hoyt and moved to Cheshire Center in Allegan County in 1939 where the family ran a gas station and grocery store. He graduated from Bloomingdale H.S. in March 1943 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served as an Aviation Ordnanceman 3rd Class. He married his high school sweetheart, Roberta Pease on September 13, 1944 while home on leave. After serving with honor during WWII, he returned home and worked at Rockwell International in Allegan, briefly, before opening Bob’s Barber Shop which he ran for 37 years before retirement. He was a longtime member of First Congregational Church where he had been a Sunday School Teacher, Church Moderator, Superintendent of Christian Education and a member of the Board of Directors. Additionally, he served as the Director of The Moon School, was an Allegan Township Supervisor for many years, was the Past-President of the Allegan County Historical Society, a member of the Allegan Intermediate School Board, the Allegan Athletic Boosters and the American Legion. He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Roberta; his half-brother, Victor Rieber; and stepbrother, Floyd Hoyt. He is survived by his daughters, Sandra Carlson, Kathleen (Daryl) Knight and Judith Gavan; five grandchildren, Angela Gavan (Dave) Hamady, Scott (Vatsana) Gavan, Rebecca (Jason) Bohl, Kristy Macdonald, and Carrie Carlson (Ben) Blickle; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandsons.
