Born April 16, 1941, in Orangeburg, he was a son of the late James Morgan Sprott, Sr. and the late Elizabeth Brailsford Sprott. He was a US Army veteran of the Vietnam War, a retired educator and coach for Clarendon School District Two, a member and former Deacon of the Presbyterian Church at Manning. He enjoyed tracing family history and compiled histories of the Cantey and Burgess Families found in the Clarendon County Archives. He was past president of the Clarendon County Historical Society and former board member of the Clarendon County Museum.
