Actor. An American Puppeteer, Cartoonist, Author and Speaker well known for portraying 'Big Bird' and 'Oscar the Grouch' on on the children's educational television program "Sesame Street." Born in Waltham, Massachusetts, he graduated from Acton High School and attended the Art Institute of Boston before dropping out to join the United States Air Force. While he was in the Air Force, he created comics and cartoons. In 1955, he performed in "Rascal Rabbit," and started puppeteering in "The Judy and Goggle Show" a few years later. He performed in "Bozo's Big Top" throughout the 1960's before joining "Sesame Street" in 1969. In 2000, The Library of Congress honored him for his work. In 2003, he published his memoir, "The Wisdom of Big Bird." During his career he earned five Daytime Emmy awards, and in 2006, he was awarded with the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences' Lifetime Achievement Award.
