Roberta Glenn Moore, 81, of Asheville passed away peacefully on Friday, March 30, 2018 at her home due to complications with sjogren’s syndrome. Born April 16, 1936 in Spruce Pine, NC, she was the oldest daughter of the late Robert and Addie Glenn. She was an alumnus of King University in Bristol, TN where she received a B.S. in Education. She resided in Japan for 17 years as a missionary with her late husband, James B. Moore, where she taught English at Seiwa College for Girls and assisted James in church planting work. When returning from Japan, they moved to Gaffney, SC to work together at Beech St. Presbyterian Church for six years. During this time Roberta taught second grade at the Gaffney Day School. In 1984, Roberta followed James to Princeton, NC where they ministered together until his retirement at Progressive Presbyterian church. They lived in Smithfield, NC for awhile as she continued teaching in Johnston County schools. In the late 90’s they made their final move by settling in Asheville and became active members of Malvern Hills Presbyterian church. Roberta also worked in the Buncombe County school system as a reading tutor at Emma Elementary until her retirement. As a member of Malvern Hills, she enjoyed serving as the Ladies’ Sunday school teacher, and President of the Women’s Ministry. In her free time, she enjoyed gardening and canning vegetables, reading, writing letters of encouragement to those who needed it most, and hosting meals for family and friends. James and Roberta were married for 59 years before his death. Roberta served faithfully as a wonderful, gentle mother, wife, teacher, sister, and friend. She impacted and touched many lives with her gift of teaching. Mostly she taught through example. She will also always be remembered for her gift of hospitality. Many family reunions and gatherings of friends around her table will never be forgotten as she made everyone feel at home with her thoughtfulness, humble elegance, and care to special details in entertaining guests. Roberta helped bring people together. Surviving are her children, Sarah Moore Witt and her spouse, Terry, of Angier, NC, and Roger Moore and his spouse, Tiffany, of Simpsonville, SC; siblings: MaryAnn Unferth and her spouse, Bill, of Charlotte, NC, Bobby Glenn and his spouse, Alice, of Spruce Pine, NC, Carolyn Cordell and her spouse, Jack, of Black Mountain, and Gene Glenn and spouse, Pam, of Spruce Pine; grandchildren, Rebecca Moore, Austin Moore, Ben Young, and Katie Young. A private graveside service will be held at 10:00 am on April 14, 2018 for the family at Ashlawn Gardens of Memory. A public memorial service for friends and family will be held at 2 PM at Malvern Hills Presbyterian Church with Rev. Tom Cox.
