Edward Gaither Mathews was the youngest son of William Mathews, Sr. and his wife Alice Gaither of Lincoln Co., GA. Unfortunately Edward's mother died in 1818 when he was about a year old, and consequently he was brought up by another family. He had three brothers, John, James, and Philip, and two sisters. His father died in Lincoln Co. in 1845.

Edward married his cousin-once-removed Mildred Elizabeth Mathews on December 28, 1841, and for several years they lived on a farm by the Broad River. In 1850, they moved to Meriwether Co., where they remained for the rest of their lives.

Edward and Mildred had a large family. Their children were Oscar F. Mathews, who married Mollie Leverett; Josephine Elizabeth Mathews, who married John A. Leverett; Satira Louise Mathews, who married Joseph Warren Chunn; Ann Elizabeth Mathews, who married Dr. Jacob Bowman Wright; Philip Edward Mathews, who married Alice Irene Crouch; Martha Ada Mathews, who married Hendley Jones Hall; Dr. James Christopher Mathews, who never married; Albert Clark Mathews, who married Mary D. Kempson; Edward Gaither Mathews, Jr., who also did not marry; Laura Estelle Mathews, who died young; and William Boardman Mathews, who married Lucretia McCrary.

"MATHEWS, Mr. Edward G., died at his home near Oakland last Sunday, aged about 92 years; he was descended from a pioneer family that came to Georgia from Virginia, and he came to Meriwether from Elbert county over 50 years ago; a member of the Baptist church, his remains were interred Monday by the side of his late wife in the Mathews burial ground at the residence of John T. Strozier, Esq. near Jones' Mills."
