Larry J. Powell, Sr., 86, died Saturday, April 23, 2016 at Candler Hospital in Savannah after a short illness. He was a retired associate editor of the Savannah Morning News and Savannah Evening Press as well as the author of many books, magazine stories and articles. A native of Collins, he was the son of Clarence L. Powell and Zetta James Powell of Collins. Mr. Powell was a 1945 graduate of Collins High School and attended the University of Alabama. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served in the United States Army. Mr. Powell was a member of the Collins United Methodist Church.

Surviving include his wife of 65 years, Martha Strickland "Bobbie" Powell of Collins; a son, Larry James Powell, Jr. and his wife, Gail of Reidsville; and a daughter, Martha Leigh Powell of Woodbine.

The funeral service was held Tuesday, 11 o'clock at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel with Rev. Marc Foster officiating. Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.
