James Walter Witherspoon, Jr., age 54, of Broadway Street, Lenoir, passed away on Saturday, December 7, 2019 at Caldwell UNC Health Care.

He was born September 30, 1965 in Caldwell County to Fran Patterson Witherspoon and the late James Walter Witherspoon, Sr.

Mr. Witherspoon was employed as a machine operator at JBS and was a member of Christ Church of Lenoir. He loved his children, was loyal and dedicated to everyone he loved and was a hard worker. He dearly loved sports and was the first African American Quarterback in Caldwell County. He led West Caldwell High School Warriors Football to the State Championship in 1982.

James had proudly served his nation in the U. S. Navy.

Survivors in addition to his mother include his significant other, Ashley Stewart of Black Mountain, NC; two sons, Kyle Jamison Witherspoon and Kellen James Witherspoon, both of Lenoir; three sisters, Tamra Aguilera and (Joe Aguilera), Marcia Witherspoon and Valerie "Vandy" Cash (Alvin), all of Lenoir; numerous aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins; and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 12, 2019 at 2:00 P.M. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Pastor Aaron Patterson, Jr. Interment will immediately follow the service at Blue Ridge Memorial Park with military honors provided by Caldwell County Veteran's Honor Guard and the U.S. Navy.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
