Wanda Carter, 88, of Amarillo and formerly of Pampa, passed away December 6, 2019 in Amarillo.

Services will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, December 10, 2019, at Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel in Pampa, with Rev. Norman Rushing, pastor of Central Baptist Church of Pampa, officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Pampa under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors.

Wanda was born November 27, 1931 in Mangum, Oklahoma to A. G. “Pete” and Corean Cates Roberts. She moved to Lefors in 1933 and was a graduate of Lefors High School. All through high school she developed a fondness for history, genealogy and historical records documentation. She had a particular fondness for Gray County history. She married Charles Carter on June 15, 1952 in Lefors. He preceded her in death on February 18, 2006.

Wanda found her way to the Gray County Clerk’s Office in the early 1950s, working for Charlie Thut as his chief deputy. In 1970, she ran for, and was elected Gray County Clerk. She served for 28 years, retiring in April of 1998, completing 45 years of service in the Clerk’s office.

Wanda enjoyed her family, especially her grandson, Bobby.

She was a member of the International Association of Government Officials, Order of the Eastern Star #65, Texas County and District Clerks Association, and First Baptist Church in Pampa.

Survivors include her son, Randy Carter and wife Pamela of Amarillo; a sister, Betty Garland and husband Gad of Burkburnett; a brother, Art Roberts of Richardson; a grandson, Bobby Carter and wife Sarah of Lubbock; a great granddaughter, two-year old Hannah Carter; Pamela’s sister Debbie “Sassy” Corona who was instrumental in Wanda’s care for the last two years; and several nieces and nephews who loved her greatly. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Eddie Joe Roberts.

The family wishes to offer a special thanks to Melanie Hohman with Humana Healthcare and Encompass Hospice for their loving care of Wanda.
