From wikitree.com:
Françoise Hargrave was born c. 1763 in the British colony of Virginia, possibly in Brunswick County. [citation needed] She was the first of several children born to Benjamin Hargrave and Rebecca Gwaltney, possibly the descendants of French Huguenots who settled in Virginia, via England, around 1700. She and at least several members of her family joined the western migration, eventually settling in St. Martinville, Louisiana, which was largely populated by French settlers, but ruled by Spain.

Siblings

Darius (1769) [1]
Mary Anne (1770) [2]
Adelaide (1771) [3]
James (1772) [4]
Christine (1775) [5]

Françoise Hargrave married John Abshire circa 1778.[citation needed] Their first child was born in 1779 so they likely married before that, possibly on the way to Louisiana. They had thirteen children together, baptizing them all at St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church in St. Martinville. This fact does not necessarily rule out the possibility that the Hargraves were from the Huguenots, i.e. Protestants. St. Martin de Tours was the only church in the area, the first Protestant congregation not arising until 1818 in New Orleans. Some chose to forget their differences.

In 1845 Françoise bought two parcels of land with her youngest son, Isaac. They purchased 162.85 acres of land together in Acadia and Vermilion Parishes, about halfway between Morse and Kaplan. [14] The second parcel, 159.62 acres in Avoyelles Parish, they appear to have assigned to Isaac Lyons. The patent details, including an image of the documents and maps, can be viewed here. Françoise was 82 years old, so most likely these transactions were made in anticipation of leaving her share of the property to Isaac. (Another possibility, though a bit far-fetched at her age, is that they were done in anticipation of her going West with many of her family members via the Hanks- Weed- Abshire wagon train of about that time.)

Françoise (Hargrave) Abshire died after 1845.
