Melissa was born on April 8, 1967 in Richlands, Virginia to the late Henry and Eula Mae Mitchell Stevenson. She had worked for 20 years as the secretary of the First United Methodist Church in Richlands, Virginia.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother, Wayne Stevenson.
