Gerald Stephen "Steve" Lyons

Gerald Stephen "Steve" Lyons passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 1, 2019. Steve was born in Ponca City, Oklahoma to the late Cecil and Martha Lyons (later: Merrick).

He grew up across the midwest while his father worked as a migrant day laborer during the Great Depression. His family finally settled in Indianapolis when he was 12, and it became his hometown for the rest of his life.

Steve graduated from Shortridge High School. He then served in the U.S. Navy, stationed at Treasure Island at the end of World War II. Under the G.I. Bill, Steve studied at Purdue University, where he received a degree in civil engineering. Following graduation, Steve spent his entire 42-year career at the Indianapolis Water Company and retired as Executive Vice President in 1984.

In his free time, Steve enjoyed a variety of recreational activities. He golfed with the same foursome for 54 years and played poker with the same set of friends for 62 years. He also attended Purdue sporting events and generously supported Purdue athletics for decades. Living in Speedway for 22 years, he became an avid fan of auto-racing.

Steve was predeceased by his loving wife of 64 years, Joan Praed Lyons. He is survived by his children, Dr. Thomas Scott Lyons (wife Debra Dubow), Kathleen Lucinda Portell (husband David), Dr. John Stephen Lyons (wife Dr. Lise Bisnaire) and Matthew Charles Lyons (wife Sarah Lyons); his grandchildren, Trevor Lyons, Caitlin Lyons and Dylan Lyons; and his sister Cecelia K. Mathews.

A brief graveside service will be held on Tuesday, December 10 at 10 a.m. at Zionsville Cemetery.
