Wayne Peters, 85, of Viking, MN, passed away peacefully at home with his family present on Tuesday, December 3, 2019.
Funeral service will be held 10:30 AM on Saturday, December 7, 2019 at Zion Lutheran Church in Viking, MN with Pastor Ollie Urdahl officiating. Burial will be held at a later date at the Viking Cemetery in Viking, MN.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM with a 7:00 PM prayer service on Friday, December 6, 2019 at Zion Lutheran Church in Viking, MN. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the service on Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church.
Wayne Almont Peters was born on October 19, 1934 in Thief River Falls, MN, the son of John Richard Peters and Selma Bertina (Holden) Peters. He was baptized on February 17, 1935 and confirmed on October 6, 1946, both at Zion Lutheran Church in Viking, MN. Wayne attended Viking Country School, graduated from Newfolden High School in May of 1952, and attended one semester at Bemidji College.
On July 28, 1956 Wayne was united in marriage to JoAnn Mead at Zion Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, MN. They began their life together in South St Paul. Wayne was drafted into the U.S. Army on February 18, 1958 and stationed in Germany. JoAnn joined him in Germany from 1959-1960. They enjoyed the year traveling, sightseeing, while living with a German family. Wayne was honorably discharged as a Medical Specialist, Pvt E-1 on February 10, 1960, receiving medals for Good Conduct, Marksman, and Sharpshooter.
They returned to South St. Paul, renting an apartment and brought home their first born, Jill. They then moved to Inver Grove Heights and rented a basement apartment from Johnson’s where they brought home their middle daughter, Paula. They purchased the farmhouse up the hill and settled in, where they brought home their youngest daughter, Nancy. The family decided to move to Viking in 1970. Wayne had written 8 reasons why he wanted to move back to Viking. Some reasons included getting the girls out of the big school system; getting some country into the girls; being close to family and friends; getting out of the rat race; and because the farmhouse on the hill needed renovations. They bought his grandparent’s house on the outskirts of Viking and worked hard to remodel it into their home. He enjoyed the quiet country life, the closeness of a small rural community and wanted that for his family.
Wayne worked a variety of jobs in the area before moving to the Twin Cities in early 1955. While in South St. Paul he worked full-time at Swifts Meat Packing Co and a part-time evening job at B2 Asphalt Co. Wayne worked at 3M before moving back to Viking in the spring of 1970 and began his career at Artic Cat until retiring. He also farmed part-time over the years with the Peters’ boys.
Wayne loved to keep a beautiful garden – always willing to share his bountiful harvest with others. He spent many hours at “Wayne’s World,” enjoying the quietness and beauty of nature. He was an avid bowler and horseshoe thrower. Wayne also loved his sports and fantasy leagues, enjoyed hunting, fishing, and “breaking” arms.
Wayne served as Viking Mayor for many years and various other positions on the city council. He was an active member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Viking and served in several capacities in the community, always volunteering his time and talents.
Wayne is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, JoAnn (Mead) Peters of Viking, MN; three daughters: Jill (Gerry) Moreno of Crookston, Paula (Joe) Chamernick of East Bethel, and Nancy (Pat) Gerszewski of Newfolden; nine grandchildren: Corey Potucek, Selina Potucek, Shelby Potucek, Jeramy Kukowski, Stacy Kukowski, Holly Klecker, Megan Rheault, Evan Gerszewski, and Erik Gerszewski; 15 great-grandchildren: Sommer, Tyson, Jason, Heaven, Isaac, Owen, Wesley, Eithen, Sophia, Aubrianna, Trystan, Reagan, Nash, Crosby, and Isabel; sister and brothers: Bonita (George) Alafouzos, Gary Peters, and Jerome (Cheryl) Peters; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Donald; sister-in-law, Fern; and son-in-law, Bruce Kliedon.
