Son of Irvin and Josephine Tungeitt. In December 1944 his parents were presented an air medal and one oak leaf cluster in Charles' honor. He was a gunner in the Army Air Forces and was shot down in combat in Europe in June 1944.

11-year old brother Floyd attended the ceremony. The Tungeitt's had two other sons were were currently stationed in New Guinea and the European Theater in December 1944. (The Tribune, Seymour IN, 12/29/44)

SOLDIER BURIED WITH MILITARY HONORS
The body of Staff Sergeant Charles Tungeitt, who was killed in action in the European area in World War 2, arrived here Tuesday and funeral services were held at Dowd's funeral home Wednesday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. W. H. Dillard. Burial took place in Hillcrest Cemetery.

He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Tungeitt and entered the Army from Jennings County. He served in the Air Corps as gunner and held the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was shot down while on a mission over France.

Funeral services were conducted under the auspices of Post No. 2021 Veterans of Foreign Wars. A color guard and firing squad escorted the body, with Sergeant-at-Arms Robert Clerkin in charge. Military services were conducted at the cemetery by Orland Wilson, Legion Post chaplain, a bugler sounded taps, and salute was fired by the firing squad. The flag which draped the casket was presented to the young man's father.
