Curtis George Austin was born December 3, 1930 in Sayre, Oklahoma to Mary Pearly Faye (Stephens) and Curtis Clyde Austin. He passed away December 3, 2019 at Sayre, Oklahoma at the age of 89 years.
Curtis grew up in the Erick community where he attended school at Sayre until the age of 14 and finished in Erick. At the age of 17 he was married to Norma Jean (Bassett) Austin on August 21, 1948 in Wheeler, Texas. After their marriage they made their home in Erick, Oklahoma where they made their home and raised their family. Curtis worked at the United Carbon Plant in Shamrock, Texas for 11 years and also worked in his shop. Throughout his life he built many buildings and structures for local farmers and ranchers as well as the community and industries including the cotton gin. Curtis was active as a volunteer firefighter and served as the chief of the Erick Fire Department for one year. He attended the Erick Church of Christ and served many years as an elder. Curtis and Norma Jean spent many summers in Gunnison, Colorado in a fifth wheel and eventually purchased a vacation home where they enjoyed 4-wheeling and fishing. He also enjoyed gardening, metal art, working and attending church.
He is preceded in death by his parents, step-mother, Edith Austin, brother, Dale Austin and an infant great great grandson, Berit McAbee.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Norma Jean, of the home; 4 children, Curtis L. Austin and wife, Joyce, Erick, OK, Dennis Austin and wife, Camilla, Elk City, OK, Rusty D. Austin and wife, Jana, Erick, OK and Melodie Lynn Smith and husband, Rod, Erick, OK; 12 grandchildren; numerous great as well as great great grandchildren; 1 sister, Sherry Lujan and husband, Louie, Roy, NM; sister-in-law, Billie Austin, Baker City, OR and a host of other relatives and friends.
