Ernie grew up in Kurtz, Indiana and attended Brownstown High School where he was active in Show Choir and Marching Band. After completing high school, Ernie attended Sullivan University and lived for many years in Arkansas. Ernie loved his church and was a Methodist and loyal member of the Maynard Avenue Methodist Church in Columbus, Ohio.
