A veteran of the Civil War with the rank of Corporal in Company I of the 39th Missouri Infantry.

Hosea was known as "The Horse-Man" with his breed of fine Belgian horses and as a horse trader in Scotland County, Missouri.

His father was an early Scotland County settler and a major landholder.
