Marjorie Kathryn (Bean) Griffin, 96, died peacefully at home on Monday, November 25, 2019. A lifelong resident of the south side of Syracuse, Marjorie was born on September 10, 1923 at her parents' home. She was the daughter of Harold and Belle Rose (Couch) Bean. Marjorie attended Onondaga Valley High School and Syracuse University where she earned her Home Economics degree. She did her student teaching at South Onondaga and Fabius High Schools, and then spent 35 years teaching home economics at LaFayette Junior/Senior High School until she retired in 1985. After retiring, she worked at J.C. Penney in the children's department. She married her beloved husband, Robert (Bob) Murray Griffin of Sherrill, while he was home on leave from the Navy on the day after Christmas in 1945. She was a member and Deacon of Park Central Presbyterian Church and then First Presbyterian Church, both of Syracuse. She used her home economics skills to run sewing and cooking classes for her daughters' local Syracuse 4H groups. She and Bob spent many summers in the 70s and 80s in the Thousand Islands at Birch Haven Campground in Clayton, NY in their trailer. They continued their lakeside travels at Sunset Park on Cross Lake in Memphis, NY. Upon retirement, she and Bob took a road trip across the country which remained a highlight of their retirement. Marjorie, or Midge to some, enjoyed spending her retirement on weekly family lunches ("Bean Day") at Denny's restaurants in either central NY, or later in Florida, with all her siblings and any visiting children. She and Bob spent many winters in St. Petersburg, Florida where they enjoyed picnic lunches at local parks enjoying the sunshine. They enjoyed spending time with their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Marjorie loved to cook for her family and she and her sisters enjoyed comparing recipes for pies, especially during reunions and holiday get-togethers. Predeceased by her beloved husband, Robert Murray Griffin (2016); Marjorie is survived by her brother, David (Patti) Bean of Sarasota, Florida; their four children, Patricia Griffin of Syracuse, Stephen Griffin (Miriam) of Leesburg, Florida, Diane Griffin of Syracuse, and Carol Griffin Bradley (Mark) of Acton, MA; five granddaughters, and one grandson, Virginia Powell (Jim) of Minoa, NY, Jennifer Griffin of No Brentwood, MD , Matthew Griffin of Ithaca, NY, Julia Griffin of Bethesda, MD, Alison Bradley of Boston, MA, and Sarah Bradley of Ft Worth, TX; and three great granddaughters, Grace, Hannah and Caitlin Powell of Minoa, NY; and many nieces and nephews. Marjorie is predeceased by her parents, Harold and Belle Rose Bean; as well as her sisters, Doris Bean (St. Petersburg, Florida), Elizabeth (Ken) Jenner (Camillus, NY and Top of the World in Clearwater, Florida) and Ruth (Basil) Houghton of Parish, NY, and So. Pasadena, Florida; her brother, Donald (Bertha) Bean of Bethel Park, PA, and St. Petersburg, Florida; and her daughter-in-law, Josefina Griffin of Ithaca, NY. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Fairchild & Meech DeWitt Chapel, with a memorial service to celebrate her life on Monday, December 23 at 10 am at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 2200 Valley Drive, Syracuse, New York. Private interment in Onondaga Valley Cemetery.
