Earl was my father-in-law for almost 50 years. He lived in eastern Oregon for most of that time and Carla (his daughter) and I were only occasionally able to visit him. When we did, we always toured his properties and businesses, including a visit with a talented employee responsible for building trailers sold throughout the region.

As a young man, Earl learned to build trailers during visits to various companies that he did business with. A couple of months ago, Carla and I drove him to Napa, Idaho where he picked up parts for trailers that needed to be completed in September. He never quit working even after he lost most of his vision to macular degeneration and much of his hearing due to age related problems.

He always treated us well and I enjoyed going with him (and LeRoy) into the mountains around La Grande, Oregon to cut down trees and stack them up at his home. He depended on the wood for warmth during the cold winter months. At the time of his death he was 89 years old and while his body was failing him nothing slowed him down. He continued to receive phone calls from customers as he watched old TV westerns in his living room and delivered them to a variety of places including Pendleton, Oregon where his beloved cousin Lou lives.

Earl was a very strong willed and independent man who understood business and finance like no one I've ever met. He loved his home, his family, old friends, and of course his dogs. He worked long and hard all of his life and was generous to the people who worked for him. I have no doubt that he would have continued working well into his 90's if it were not for the accident that took his life. He had a keen mind to the end and we will miss him very much. - John Allen
