John’s father served in the War of 1812. Over a 40-year period, the family lived in New York, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Michigan. By the time his son, John Almon Pierce was 17, the family is found in Alaiedon Twp., Ingham Co., Michigan on the 1850 U.S. Federal Census.

In 1860, John is found working as a farm laborer for Nelber Londry and is boarding with the family. By the 1870 census, both John and Nelber’s wife, Lydia are gone. Nelber is living in the same place with the children as found on the census.

By 1 Jun 1863, John is married, according to a special census taken for able-bodied available Civil War soldiers. John enlisted with Co. F, 128th Infantry Regiment in Brookston, Prairie Co., IN and mustered on 12 Jan 1864.

On 27 Feb 1865, John was discharged. Nine months later, he and and "Liddie" (probably Lydia Londry, wife of the farmer he worked for in the 1850s), had a son, James C. Pierce in Nov. 1866 in Indiana.

The 1870 Census has not yet been located for the family.

John is found on the 1880 and 1900 census in Independence, Montgomery Co., Kansas.

Lydia died in Jun 1903.

John married Lucinda E. Tittle, the widow of Joseph Hughes on 6 Feb 1906. She was about 30 years younger than John. Married just three years, they had no children even though Lucinda was of child-bearing age.

The last census John appears on before he died is the March 1905 Kansas State Census at the same Independence, Kansas address.

John wrote his will on 8 Apr 1908. He died 8 Mar 1909. He was approximately 75-years old.

John’s will was entered into Probate Court on 13 Mar 1909. He made his wife, Lucinda the executor of the will. She was left everything but $25.00 given to John’s only child, his son, James C. Pierce.
