Civil War Veteran - Prisoner of War

Thomas Keyes was born on November 11, 1833, in Jefferson County, New York. On August 22, 1862, at the age of 28, he enlisted at Denmark, New York. He was mustered in on September 12, 1862, as a Corporal in Company D of the 6th New York Heavy Artillery. Thomas was transferred on December 31, 1862, to Company M of the 5th New York Heavy Artillery where he served as a Private. This regiment was assigned to Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. On July 4, 1864, during a raid by Confederate General Early’s army, Thomas was captured and imprisoned. He was incarcerated at various southern prisons, including six months at Andersonville. While at Andersonville prison
he contracted chronic diarrhea and rheumatism. He was discharged on June 26, 1865,
in Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia.

Thomas married Mary Sherwin in 1860 in Lewis County, New York. They moved to Petoskey in 1885 and lived in a home on Michigan Street. When he was physically able to, Thomas worked as a cooper1. He suffered for 48 years with the diseases he had contracted in prison. Thomas passed away on March 22, 1912, at the age of 78.
