US Congresswoman. A member of the Democratic Party, she served Louisiana's 8th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1985 to 1987. She served WAVES (Women's section of the United States Naval Reserve) during World War II. She later received her Bachelor of Arts from Louisiana State University and following graduation, she served as an aid to Senator Wayne Morse of Oregon and Congressman James G. Polk. She was elected in a special election to fill the vacancy left following the death of her husband, Congressman Gillis William Long. She died of complications from dementia.
