REFLECTIONS OF THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF LEON (Nylon) SMITH 1934 - 2021 "TO EVERYTHING THERE IS A SEASON, AND A TIME TO EVERY PURPOSE UNDER THE HEAVEN; A TIME TO BE BORN,AND A TIME TO DIE, A TIME TO PLANT AND A TIME TO PLUCK UP THAT WHICH IS PLANTED." ECCLESIASTES 3:1-2 A TIME TO BE BORN It was at day-break on April 27, 1934 in the quaint settlement of Snow Hill, North End, Long Island, in The Commonwealth of The Bahamas that the late Susan Smith gave birth to a bouncing baby boy that she and her husband, the late Sylvanues Smith named His life on Long Island was only 16 short years but they were rich with experiences that helped to shape the man he would become. At the tender age of four, Leon was enrolled in a small single room school house where he began his socialization and early childhood education. An inquisitive boy, he quickly adapted to his new environment and over the years became an outstanding model student among his peers. Due to lack of access to higher education opportunities on the Island, he completed his formal education as a top student in his class, but was forced to leave school at the legal school leaving age of fourteen. Leon landed his first job as a deck hand on his grand-father's schooner, the "Blanch Eva". An adventurer at heart, Leon soon became bored with his experience as a deck hand and at the age of sixteen he migrated to the United States of America to seek his fortune as a contract farm worker. Initially his employment took him to many of the farm belt States in the United States of America. Eventually, he was offered employment at the Okeelanta Corporation, one of the largest sugar producing company in the region. It was in the city of Belle Glade that he met and fell in love with his bride, the late Maria L Smith. They were joined in holy matrimony in 1988 and they shared twenty blissful years together before she was called to glory. Together this couple raised a total of ten biological and adopted children. Leon also known to his friends as (Nylon), lived a full and productive life. He loved to travel and spent most of his retirement years visiting other countries but most of all he loved his family. His children, his grand- children and great grand- children were his pride and joy. During the latter year of his life, Leon faced serious health issues which necessitated numerous hospitalizations and extended care. Surrounded by family members in the early summer morning hours of Sunday July 11, 2021, Leon held the hands of his heavenly father as he transitioned from his earthly life to rest safely in that glorious place that his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ had prepared for him.
