Painter. Considered by many to be the finest Australian Aborigine artist, he is best known for his vivid watercolors of his country's Outback. Namatjira was born at Hermannsburg, near Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. He sold all 41 of his paintings at his first solo exhibition in Melbourne in 1938. In 1953 he was awarded the Queen's Coronation medal, and in 1955 he was elected an honorary member of the Royal Art Society of New South Wales. A road near his birthplace is named in his honor. Australia issued a series of postage stamps to commemorate Namatjira's centenary in 2002.
