Marvin Keith Baker, 88, of Wayne, formerly of Pender, died Friday, July 21, 2017 at Providence Medical Center in Wayne with his wife of 39 years, Norene by his side.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 29 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Bancroft, with visitation and a program of shared memories at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, July 28 in Holy Cross Fellowship Hall.
Marvin Keith Baker was born March 31, 1929 in Pender to George and Zelma Baker and grew up on three of the four farms that once occupied Baker Corner seven miles east of Pender. Marvin farmed his whole life with father, George, and brother, Alvin, and later with his wife, Norene. Farming was interrupted in 1951 when Marvin rose to the call of patriotic duty and served in the Korean War with the 139th Artillery Division of the Nebraska National Guard. He was proud of his service and would like to describe how they would make a run to the front lines to fire their shells and then change positions quickly so that the enemy could not ascertain their position. Because of Marv's height, he also was often called upon by the commanding officer to accompany prisoners to the rear area often a distance of over a 100 miles in horribly cold weather in an open jeep.
Shortly after Marvin's return from Korea he met his forever sweetheart, Norene Steinhoff, a school teacher from Bancroft. Thus began a romance and courtship that lasted the rest of their lives. They were married on July 21,1978 and began their lives at their home on Baker Corner until they moved to Brookdale Independent Living in Wayne in July of 2016. Marv loved horses and farming, but his passion was working on antique windmills. Many of his restored windmills stand on the prairies of the United States and Canada, a testament to his skill and carpentry.
Survivors include his wife Norene, his brother, Alvin, and a host of loving nieces and nephews as well and many, many friends and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by a brother Kenneth; his parents, George and Zelma; a sister-in-law Carol, and a nephew, Steven.
