Obituary for John Charles Pate, Sr.
August 29, 1928- November 19, 2019
John Charles Pate, Sr., better known as Jack, age 91, was a resident of in New Waverly, Texas. Jack passed from this life to the next on November 19, 2019.
Jack was born in Houston, Texas, August 29, 1928, and grew up in the area of Friendly Road in Houston with his parents, Ottie Mae and Charlie Addison Pate and three sisters, Dorothy, Clela, and Hattie Lee until his family moved to New Waverly in 1945. He met and married Bobbie Ann Traylor of New Waverly in 1947 and there they raised three children, Jackie, Cynthia, and John Charles Pate, Jr (Johnny).
Jack was a very dedicated, involved parent loved working and doing anything with his family. Jack and Bobbie did everything together and always had some project going. In their retirement, they enjoyed raising their miniature horses and made many friends along the way. One of Jack’s favorite activities was hunting with Johnny, his father and nephew Charlie (Bubba) and his son Clay. They looked forward to deer season every year. Jack was known by all for his quick wit and sense of humor.
Jack was a hard-working man and a plumber by trade. He ran his own plumbing business, first in Conroe, Texas, then in New Waverly. He taught his son, Johnny the trade. Later in life, he and Johnny opened a hardware/plumbing business in New Waverly which they ran until Jack’s retirement. Through the years, Jack gave his New Waverly grandchildren and many community young people opportunities to work at the hardware business and in his plumbing business. Perhaps the most important things he passed along to all those young people were honesty and a strong work ethic. Jack loved plumbing work because he was associated with many people and loved talking with and helping people.
Jack was a Christian and a member of First Baptist Church in New Waverly. He served in many capacities in the church through the years including teaching Sunday School and serving on the building Committee. While on that committee, the Family Life Center was built. Jack’s Christianity reached out well beyond the boundaries of the church as he met people in the community through his business. His Christian spirit, love and compassion were extended to all.
Jack is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Bobbie Ann Pate, and their children: Jackie Dawson and son-in-law Larry Dawson of Huntsville, Cynthia Clinton of New Waverly, and John Charles Pate, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Cindy Pate of New Waverly. Jack is also survived by seven grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, one great- great granddaughter, numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Jack was preceded in death by his father and mother, Charlie Addison Pate and Ottie Mae Pate, and his sisters Dorothy Ross, Clela Garner, and Hattie Wojcik. He was also preceded in death by his grandson, Joshua Andrew Clinton.
Jack is now in Heaven with his Heavenly Father and reunited with all the loved ones and friends who have gone before. He leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion to family, his church and his community. He will be missed by all.
