US Congressman. At the the outbreak of the Civil War, he was a member of the South Carolina State Military Academy. He enlisted in the Confederate Army as a member of the Battalion State cadets and served until the close of the war. After his discharge he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1871 and commenced practice in Newberry. From 1877 to 1884, he was member of the South Carolina State House of Representatives and a member of the State Executive Committee of the Democratic Party, 1880 to 1884. In 1891, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-second Congress, serving until 1893. A unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law and was a member of the State Constitutional Convention in 1895.
