Originally "Olaus Olsen Gilbertson," his name was Americanized later. He came to Luverne, Minn., in the 1870s, and later received 160 acres of land near Pipestone, Minn., under the Homestead Act. In 1888, he moved to Jasper, Minn., where, with a partner, he opened a store. Later he bought a 320 acre farm near Jasper, Minn. In 1907 he moved with his family to Snohomish, Wash. There he purchased a drug store, which he ran along with his son Steve and daughter Alma.
