Anna Arlene Peterson was born on a farm seven miles south of Faith, SD in Meade County. She received her education in a one-room country school for her first eight years. In 1936 Arlene moved with her family to the Samuelson Homestead on Beaver Creek south of Brandon, SD. Following her graduation from Brandon High School, Arlene continued her education at Black Hills Teachers College in Spearfish, SD. Arlene then spent the next eight years teaching in rural one-room schools in Minnehaha County and primary grades in Larchwood, IA. In 1949 as the rural schools were closing, Arlene attended Augustana College and taught third and fourth grades at Brandon Elementary. She then moved to Roy, Montana and continued teaching until moving back to South Dakota in 1954.
Arlene was united in marriage with Kenneth Leroy Erickson on August 29, 1954 at Beaver Valley Lutheran Church in rural Valley Springs, SD. Arlene and Kenneth were blessed with a son, Michael and a daughter, Lorene. Kenneth passed away on November 4, 2005.
Arlene was a very active member of Beaver Valley Lutheran Church for many years and loved being involved with WELCA and hosting many Ladies Aide events. She was also involved with the Valley Springs Legion Auxiliary where she served as President, and spent many Friday nights playing bingo. She enjoyed working in her garden, baking, taking part in the Samuelson Homestead Days, sewing and traveling. Above all, Arlene loved being a mother and grandmother.
