She was born October 10, 1943 in Amsterdam, NY to the late Roy and Doris Van Dyke Berning.

Sandy graduated from the former Wilber H. Lynch High School in Amsterdam. She worked at various locations in Amsterdam, including Amsterdam High School and The Present Company. Sandra formed deep friendships with many of her co-workers.
