The eldest daughter of Gail Antone and Ruth Niermann Wolff, Gayle grew up in Centralia, IL. Gayle graduated from high school as an honor society member at the age of 17 and flew the coop to Stephens College, a finishing school in Columbia, MO. Gayle took flying lessons, golf, a few core classes, and learned all the social necessaries for a girl in the ‘50’s.

In 1956, Gayle met Louis Ford, her boyfriend’s roommate. Louis and Gayle fell madly in love and were engaged after three weeks and married three months later on March 3, 1956. Their marriage lasted 56 years until Louis’s death in 2013.

Gayle raised three daughters while Louis worked for Texaco and later Walter Duncan. In 1966, they settled in Oklahoma City by way of Salem, IL, Tulsa, OK, and Wichita, KS. Gayle returned to school in 1970 and received a degree in Journalism from Central State University. Her family provided much fodder for her hilarious and creative writings. She also dabbled in photography at CSU and her black and white shots of wildlife and family are impressive.

Gayle wanted the best for her girls so she bought a rental house in Edmond to help finance their education at Heritage Hall. This endeavor turned into the ownership of several properties and eventually the opening of Oh Nuts! Candy Store at 5 S. Broadway, where you could find homemade chocolates, fresh popcorn, and personalized gift items painted by one of the family. Her girls were lovingly fired and rehired weekly at Oh Nuts!

Gayle loved playing games, gardening, traveling and estate sales. She had absolutely no sense of direction (and never had a map) so much of the travel time was spent lost, even ending up in the middle of a snowy corn field one time. Gayle was an excellent cook and her specialties included beef bourguignon, avocado bacon boats, and epicurious peas. Gayle adored playing tennis with her family and won numerous tournaments playing doubles with Louis and the girls. She was always in the mood for fun, whether it was playing foosball, riding her moped, or having a water fight in the back yard. She had an excellent sense of style and an infectious laugh that everyone loved.

Gayle was instrumental in raising interest and funds for the first tennis courts at Heritage Hall. She was also involved in the PTA, Girl Scout Leader, and a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where she loved Randy Spindle’s class.

In 2011, Gayle and Louis moved to southern California where they enjoyed time in the warmer temperatures and had much family close to them.

Gayle was preceded in death by her loving husband, Louis Ford, in 2013. She is survived by her girls and their husbands, Melissa Ford and Jeff Hulett of San Diego, CA, Penny and David Adams of Sierra Madre, CA, Wendy and Mike Mackey of Austin, TX. She leaves behind grandchildren Andrew Adams with wife, Dianne, and Skylar Mackey as well as great-grandchildren Emerson, Annabel, and Walter Adams. She is also survived by her brother and his wife, Don and Ann Wolff, and sister, Stephanie Snyder.

Private services will be held in Lancaster, KY. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army or the Alzheimer’s Association of America (ALZFDN.org).
